LIVING IN THE LIMINAL: let’s metabolize!

31 August – 21 December 2024

The world ‘as we know it’ is unravelling before our eyes and society finds itself in territory for which there is no map. This is a liminal zone between the no longer and the not yet. Six participatory events in the wild garden of the HILDEGARD project space in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen are offered as an invitation to collectively lean into and learn from the uncertainties, discomforts and shadows that haunt this place – with humility, curiosity and humour – so that the possibility of real transformation can emerge.

DECOMPOSERS & FRIENDS

28.09.24 2pm

A multi-sensory, carnivalesque celebration of monsters, decomposers and transformative processes – and topping-out ceremony for the compost toilet, which guests are warmly invited to help construct. Then it’s time to put your knowledge of nutrient cycles to the test in Ella Ziegler’s Holy Shit quiz, enjoy charismatic speeches by ‘invasive’ species and ‘pests’ courtesy of the Organism Democracy, pick at the bones of Lucy Powell’s edible sculpure, create and sample distilled plant odeurs for insect decomposers with Susanne Schmitt at the Barfly bar, before gathering round the fire for a hearty garden soup as darkness decends.

As members of the artist group CLUB REAL, MARIANNA SONNECK and GEORG REINHARD have been creating participatory site-specific projects since 2000:
installations, one-to-one encounters, political role play scenarios and
participatory urban development projects inviting visitors to help shape
alternative concepts of reality. Since 2018, Club Real has been
developing the participatory political experiment ORGANISMS DEMOCRACY
in Berlin, Gelsenkirchen and Augsburg. The project calls for equal
political rights for all living beings and the participation of all
urban ecosystem inhabitants in urban development – which is implemented
in the context of the individual organism democracies.

SUSANNE SCHMITT and KAT PETROSCHKAT
have run the “Barfly” since 2018 – a bar with miniature cocktails for
insects and human olfactory sampling. Depending on the location of the
current happy hour, The Barfly menu of vegetal destillates
changes and tells multilayered stories of insects, plants and people one
drop at a time. Dr. Katrin Petroschkat is a post-media artist and
cultural scientist, Dr. Susanne Schmitt is a sensory ethnographer. The
two work together conducting artistic research on ecological issues for
STEAM projects at the Naturkundemuseum Bayern with BIOTOPIA Lab.

ELLA ZIEGLER
works as an artist, curator and mediator in a national and
international context. Her experimental artistic practice and her
interdisciplinary research methods respond to and investigate
ecological, urban, social and political contexts, resulting in
interdisciplinary mediation formats and exhibitions as well as
participatory installations and sculptures. In cooperation with soil
scientist Johannes Lehmann (Cornell University, NY, USA), she transforms
complex scientific facts, social taboo topics and interdisciplinary
research into playful, humorous and informative workshops and quiz
shows.

LUCY POWELL
founded HILDEGARD end of 2022 as part of her artistic practice and
wider commitment to inner and outer activism in the service of
social-ecological transformation. She works outdoors, collaboratively
and in participative formats. From 2019–2021 she collaborated with Ally
Bisshop on the more-than-human artistic research project HOLOBIOSONICS
and from 2011–2017 with Sara Barnes on Satellite Salon for art-science
conversations in Berlin and Edinburgh, as well with Ella Ziegler on
Salon Universitas at Kassel University and Kunsthochschule.
